Press release by Baustelle Schaustelle Essen:

In his essay „Ourselves and Our Buildings“ (ca. 1921), Russian „Futurian“ Velimir Khlebnikov describes his ideal concepts of urban architecture. He is advocating cookie-cutter living units made from glass every citizen has a right to own. Every larger city has to provide gigantic steel frameworks that allow citizens to place their units should they decide to change location. His ideas are combining the architectural aesthetics visible in metropolises around the globe today with social housing ideas attributed to the former USSR. They continue to challenge the structures of modern cities and an understanding of “home”. Khlebnikov also describes a series of radical futurian building structures that go beyond pure utility. He calls them “marvelous monsters of the Futurian imagination“.

For the exhibition "Marvelous Monsters" the body becomes a monster by challenging of the visual norm. At the same time it becomes Khlebnikov's  minimal mobile unit. It is the framework and at the same time present within the rooms - living unit and inhabitant form an organically variable structure. The architectural prototypes are constructed and deconstructed again and again, combining statics and flexibility, the attachment to a place and the freedom to change it.
